Artist Statement

My goal as an artist is to spread as much beauty and joy into the world as I can. I find when times are bad, when the world is on fire, or when a rapist get elected president, I enter my studio for solace and renewal.

There, I can let go of all the chatter inside my head. As I move my hand across a canvas, color bleeding and expanding into an idea like a woman nurturing a new life within, I touch magic. Gone is my fear and worry for the future, at least temporarily.

Even when I’m most discouraged, I have a lot of hope for our planet. I think our salvation lies within the feminine spirit and I hope to convey that in each painting. My wish is that my work inspires others to express their hope, redemption and goodness within their lives.

Artist Biography

Nancy Smith is an award-winning artist, and author of Women Speak: Poetry, Portraits and Prose of the Feminine Experience. She is co-owner of Hillsborough Gallery in NC and displays her works frequently in solo exhibitions and numerous juried group exhibitions throughout the Southeast. Her studio is in her home in Carrboro, NC.
